Representation

Neighbours.

Gender.
Gender is represented in different ways in Neighbours. For example, Paul is seen to be the stereotypical bad guy, therefore this is showing men in a negative light. He is also mayor, therefore this gives the impression that he is obsessed with power, again linking with the idea that all men want is power and that they will do anything to get it. Therefore this represents men in a negative light. People watching will be able to see this as maybe they have personally experienced this, they may have a negative view on men and by Neighbours showing this, it supports their view of representation of men.
For a representation of women, there is a character called Georgia, who is pregnant and to look at, seems to be your stereotypical girly girl who cannot do a thing for herself. However the story lines that are around her, make her go against this stereotype. Due to her pregnancy, she is now trying to find a more secure lifestyle. This shows her going out on her own, showing that she doesn't need a man to be able to make her secure, which goes against the stereotype that all women need a man in their lives. It represents women in a positive light. There is also a character called Danni who has previously been in a abusive relationship, and now her boyfriend is trying to track her down. This is a again a negative representation of men, and a positive view of women as it shows Danni escaping and trying to do better with her life. This allows people to connect with the character as viewers of the show may have been through this themselves.

Ethnicity.
There aren't varied ethnicity's in neighbours. Most, if not all of the characters are white or caucasian. Therefore, there isn't much diversity in the show so this is a negative representation.

Age.
Neighbours is shown to target different age groups due to the fact that the characters are of all different ages. So throughout the show there is something for everyone, there is a character for everyone to relate to. They have a positive representation of 16-19 year olds, as there are characters named Mason and Imogen, who are a couple, but they are represented as mature adults as they are trying to prove that a crime that Mason supposedly did was faked and that it wasn't actually his fault. The shots used are transitioned into each other so that they are smoother to watch and allow the viewer to not be confused by the situation that is happening.

Issues.
Neighbours is a negative representation, this is because it shows issues that occur in every day life. These are things such as economic issues e.g - Georgia thinking that Kyle is unable to support her and their baby, so she is going to move back home with her parents so that they can support her and the baby. This may relate to viewers as they may have the same experience of be going through the same thing, therefore they can put themselves in the shoes of the character.
